LOOK AT THESE.

Paladin Trucks specializes in the import and sale of unique 4x4 vehicles with a particular emphasis on Diesel/BioDiesel vehicles. The majority of the vehicles we import and have in stock are the venerable Mitsubishi Jeep CJ3b’s. These vehicles were built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Japan under agreement from Jeep/Chrysler until 1998.

Kinja'd!!!

They have all sorts of quirky vehicles. 4x4 Previa, anyone?

Clearly we need a Georgia field trip. Or at least Who is the Leader should go take some better photos of these for us.

Update : their dedicated Jeep page has all sorts of interesting historical content.

Oh yeah I see those in Japan, old timers have those and older Suzukis.

I knew they existed, but had no idea there was an importer specializing in them (plus all the other quirky stuff they offer).

I met a guy who insists there’s a shop in Indiana still selling old MBs straight from the box. I’m very, very dubious, but definitely want to drop in sometime. If they’ve managed to pull off that miracle, I’m sure they’re out of my price range regardless.

Ehh I don’t think there are many still in the box. The MVPA raffled one off last year and I think it was a pretty rare find. My friend has a couple MBs that need a total restoration but the bodies are in decent shape.

It’s depressing to start looking at import inventories. If I was Jay Leno I would have a lot of somewhat cheap quirky vehicles.

I have often thought about replacing my Silverado with one of these.

A local Oppo, friend of mine, owns a Sambar . He bought it after (sigh) getting rid of his Jimny, but n ow his partner is interested in finding another one.

I might be able to persuade him to join us in Madison.

Thanks, definitely more than I want to pay for something of that vintage, but still very tempting.

Yup, very cool! Those Mitsu Jeeps are, in a way, more ‘ Jeep’ than a lot more modern Jeeps...

Unfortunately, I am stuck at college without a car. Maybe one day when I’m back home, but right now I am confined to walking distance of the campus. So. . .

Kinja'd!!!

But hey, I now bring y’all interesting posts about Atlanta soon. From viaducts to granite curbs to the railroad gulch to our racist skybridge addiction , there is a lot to say.

Kinja'd!!!

And those J eeps are very interesting. RHD turbo diesel M it su bishi built Willys Jeeps are not something I thought had a market here.

Did someone say viaduct?

Kinja'd!!!

Hoping I can make it there for the hunt, but it’s a long way in the middle of nowhere.

Dang that’s high up there. Truly an impressive feat of engineering.

While that looks very cool, the Atlanta viaducts are a little different. That looks like a railroad trestle spanning a gorge or valley or something. Here, people decided to build the city on top of the train tracks not build train tracks above the ground.

Kinja'd!!!

One corner of Atlanta is built significantly raised above the actual ground level. Here’s a blurry photo of the fake ground level being torn up to replace the viaduct that raises the street level some 20 feet or so at its lowest. It’s an absurdly difficul t phenomenon to photograph outside of the massive old railroad gulch; in some places you would never know you are on a bridge. Many of the older buildings in town actually have their original ground floor untouched and submerged beneath the street, but most of those are closed off to run utilities so no one knows what they really look like.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Atlanta has got to be one of the most fun cities around to have a ramble through. Rain ruined my walk (and enough wind to break my brand new umbrella and turn it inside out) but there is so much to see at every corner. It is a city built upon a city built upon a city built upon a city.

Not much room for countryside rambling within an hour or so of the city though so not sure you would want to live around here.

It is indeed absolutely massive, and was once the 3rd-longest in the world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_Viaduct

Building in layers like that reminds me a bit of Chicago. First time I tried to use my iPhone to navigate to a hotel on Wacker I ended up on L ower Wacker, not U pper (I’m not sure how GPS systems currently  manage 3-dimensional driving directions, this was many years ago) , and had to ask what appeared to be a small gathering of homeless people for help.

Never been to Chicago, but it is a similar thing. Except the street is pretty much only on the top so you have to know about the viaducts to know you are walking on one in some places. It is actually very hard to tell where they are and I can’t find a map of which streets are elevated or anything. For instance:

https://www.google.com/maps/@33.7527783,-84.3894377,253m/data=!3m1!1e3

I’m really impressed that they built such a large viaduct. Especially given it was built in a year between 1905 and 1906.
